New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
