Area Police
Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior representative said the incident rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
